Congrats to the AMHS Gymnastics Team!

Congratulations to the AMHS gymnastics team, as they finished out their season with a second place award at the DeKalb County Gymnastics Championship. They earned a team score of 95.5 and lost only to Lakeside, who earned a 95.65. Here are the girls who placed individually:
  • Sydney Wilson- 4th on Floor
  • Mesha Brown- 3rd on Vault
  • Nia Freeman- 1st on Vault, 3rd on Beam, 6th All-Around, and was also a State-Preliminary Qualifier
  • Noelle Senior- 1st All-Around, 1st on Bars, 1st on Floor, 3rd on Beam, and 6th on Vault
AMHS Senior Presents at White House Science Fair
Arabia Mountain High School Senior, Nicole Odell, was among more than 100 students who exhibited their innovative projects at the 2016 White House Science Fair.  President Obama hosted his sixth and final White House Science Fair on April 13th, welcoming more than 100 top science, technology, engineering and math students from across the country to show us how they are going to change the future of America.  

AMHS Seniors Nicole O’Dell & Haliyma Jacobs, partnered on a science project which evaluated the affects of exposure to low dose X-Rays from security scanning machines on patient diagnostic specimens. They won first place at the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) National Competition for their research. The students hope to use biotechnology to further the world’s understanding of cellular biology, replication, injury, and cellular healing.

AMHS English teacher Donnaye Moore has been chosen to receive the 2016 National Endowment for the Humanities award to attend the Folger Shakespeare Library Summer Institute.

AMHS Teacher of the Year 2015-2016
Congratulations to Dr. Fred Okoh for being named AMHS Teacher of the Year. He will represent AMHS for the 2016-2017 school year and be a candidate for the regional and district level Teacher of the Year selection process. He will also serve on the Teacher Advisory Committee. Thank you Dr. Okoh for your excellent service to Arabia Mountain High School.
Educational Support Specialist of the Year 2015-2016
Congratulations to Denise Balford for being named the AMHS Educational Support Professional of the Year! Ms. Balford will serve in this capacity for the 2015-2016 school year and be a candidate for the regional ESPOTY selection process. Thank you Ms. Balford for serving as our Discipline Secretary and doing all you do to support our students, teachers and staff! 
AMHS Reading Bowl Team 3rd Place in Division I
Congratulations to the AMHS Reading Bowl Team for an outstanding season!  After taking first place honors at both of the DeKalb District and Metro Atlanta Regional competitions.  The team was awarded 3rd place at the North Georgia Division competition held in Jasper, Georgia on February 27th!  This is a personal best for the team!  Mr. Mason says thanks to all the Reading Bowl Team and Club members for your hard work and dedication toward having the best season ever!

Water Donations to Flint, MI
Many thanks to our AMHS families for donating over 670 cases of water to help the citizens of Flint, MI during their water crisis! That's over 20,000 bottles of water!  
FBLA Takes Honors at Regional Competition
In the recent FBLA Regional Competition, twenty-four AMHS FBLA students placed in the top ten and will advance to the state competition taking place in March.  Students will compete in the areas of Accounting I, Business Communication, Intro to Information Technology, Intro to Business Communication, Help Desk, Intro to Financial Math, Global Business, Personal Finance, and Management Decision Making.

Students qualified to advance to the state competition in seven Performance Areas:
1st Place: Business Ethics, Emerging Business Issues, Public Speaking and Sales Presentation
2nd Place: Public Speaking
3rd Place: Intro to Business Presentation and Impromptu Speaking
Also, the AMHS Chapter received the Sweepstakes Award for the 4th year in a row!! This recognition is for outstanding performance by placing in the top ten in the majority of the Regional Competitive events.

Congrats Coach Richard!!
Congrats to AMHS Athletic Director Sharon Richard for being named the Region 6AAAA Athletic Director of the Year!  Thanks Coach Richard for all you do at Arabia Mountain High School!

Ms. Mayfield Named DCSD Teacher of the Year!
Congratulations to Ms. Erika Mayfield for being named the DeKalb County School District Teacher of the Year 2015-2016!  This marks the second time a teacher from Arabia Mountain High School has received this honor.  Ms. Mayfield is the AMHS CTAE Department head and teaches Entrepreneurship, Business & Technology, and Financial Literacy.  She is also a co-sponsor of FBLA.  We are very proud to have Ms. Mayfield on the faculty at Arabia Mountain High School!  
AMHS Students Receive Army Reserve Awards!
Congratulations to Gabrielle Brim and Nathaniel Williams for recently receiving awards from the Army Reserve Family Programs while serving as 335th Signal Command Army Teen Panel Members.

After School Loitering Policy
All students who are not participating in school-sponsored activities must vacate the building and leave the premises no later than 4:00pm daily. Vickie B. Turner is an educator with over 24 years of experience and is a 20+ year DeKalb County resident. She is co-pastor of Augustine Chapel with her husband. Turner has a Masters of Education from Troy State University and a Bachelors of Science from Bowling Green State University. She currently oversees the day-to-day operations of The Augustine Preparatory Academy of Atlanta (TAPAA) which was formed from Cathedral Academy (est. 1984).
