Summer Bridge Program
Summer Bridge Information 
for incoming 9th Graders

When: July 27-31, 2015
Where: Arabia Mountain High School
Time: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 12:30 pm.
Cost: $35.00. (payment details are forthcoming)

Students will rotate through four courses (Math, Science, English, and Social Studies) and four sessions (Study Skills, Team Building, Vision Board, and School Tours) during the week. The curriculum will be centered around the book, "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss. Students will be immersed in activities that are similar to what they will experience at AMHS. Students will need to bring a composition notebook, pens and pencils with them daily.


Additionally, they will participate in a Ninth grade counseling session with our head counselor, Mrs. Bates- Rogers, a hike through one of the Arabia Mountain trails, and a Ninth Grade Pow-Wow with some of our rising 10th graders.

On Friday, students will participate in a week-ending celebration where they will embark on a Scavenger Hunt (three winners will receive a prize of school supplies) and each student will receive their Summer Bridge t-shirt.
 
Summer Interships
The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), is offering paid summer internships for high school students in the Atlanta area. The TAG-Ed Summer Internship Program provides real-world experiences for high-achieving students with strong STEM aptitude. The application process is open now. Internships are limited and are on a first come, first serve basis.

Work Permits
Need a Work Permit?  Click Here to access instructions and to download the form.  Forms submitted to the school will be turned around in 24 hours. The school summer hours are from 8:00am-4:00pm Monday-Thursday.   
Summer Softball Conditioning
Summer softball conditioning will be held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:30pm-6:30pm beginning June 1st.  All participants must have a physical form on file or bring it before conditioning starts. This is for all returning and new players.  For more information please contact Coach Hoxie.

AMHS Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Erika Mayfield for being named AMHS Teacher of the Year.  She will represent AMHS for the 2015-2016 school year and be a candidate for the regional and district level Teacher of the Year selection process. She will also serve on the Teacher Advisory Committee.  Thank you Ms. Mayfield for your excellent service to Arabia Mountain High School.

 
AMHS Educational Support Professional of the Year
Congratulations to Mr. Harold Moreland for being named the AMHS Educational Support Professional of the Year!  Mr. Moreland will serve in this capacity for the 2015-2016 school and be a candidate for the regional ESPOTY selection process. Thank you Mr. Moreland for serving as our Plant Engineer and keeping our school building in top shape!
 
 
Three AMHS Athletes Sign to Colleges
Congratulations to the following AMHS Athletes for recent college signings:

AMHS Students take State Science Fair Honors

Congrats to our 6 students who represented Arabia Mountain High School and the Dekalb County School District at the 67th Georgia Science and Engineering Fair held March 27th & 28th, 2015 at the University of Georgia, Athens.  Our Science Fair students included, Cierra James, Chermia Mathis, Adenike Olagbegi, Kystal Samuels, Phyllicia Thomas, and Mauranda Upchurch.  

Winning awards in the competition were:

  • Chermia Mathis and Krystal Samuels: GSEF Fourth Honors in Chemistry & the U.S. Metric Association Award for the best use of The International System of Units in a science fair project.
  • Mauranda Upchurch: First Honor in the category of Plant Sciences & the GSEF Top 10 State Recognition winner.
  • Phyllicia Thomas: Second Honors in the category of Environmental Science.
Principal Swanson states, "I am very proud of these students. Please join me in extending well deserved congratulations to each student for making it to the State level and a special kudos to the 3 winners in their category, and to Mauranda for being in the top 10 winner category.
 
Environmental Club Visits the State Capitol


The Environmental Science Club participated with Earth Tomorrow and the National Wildlife Federation on pushing for more legislation on Environmental Science issues. They met with Governor Nathan Deal and State House Representative Dee Dee Hawkins-Haigler on important environmental issues that surround Arabia Mountain High School.
 
AMHS Student Wins St. Patrick's Day Essay Contest

AMHS Junior, Jalia Carlton-Carew, recently won the Georgia Saint Patrick’s Day essay contest sponsored by the Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival.  Jalia received a $1000.00 cash prize, was featured in the Atlanta St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and was treated to breakfast with the Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and other elected officials. AMHS HOSA Receives Recognitions
The Arabia Mountain HOSA (Health Occupations Students Association) chapter was awarded a $250 scholarship and recognized as the American Red Cross Chapter of the year during the state leadership conference. We also had 4 students place in the top 10 at state for their competitive events. They are:

Jaceyln Moore- Medical Assisting
Airianna Brown- Healthy Lifestyles

Star Student 2014-2015
AMHS would like to congratulate Maraunda Upchurch, our 2014- 2015 STAR student. 
The selected senior must have the highest SAT score in their school taken on one test date through November prior to graduation. Additionally, the student’s SAT scores must be equal to or higher than the national average, and seniors must be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in their class based on grade point average. For the third year, Dr. Okoh was recognized as this year's STAR Teacher. Maraunda chose Dr. Okoh because she believes he has had the greatest influence on her academic career 
 
Recent FFA Student Accomplishments!

Congratulations to our recent AMHS FFA participants:  
  • Iren Igbere and Brittany Heath were accepted to the State Success Conference which they attended over weekend representing our school on urban development and hunger issues. 
  • The AMHS Envirothon team ranked 9th in the State Envirothon meet this past Friday. Team members included: Vincent Shoulars, Lauren Deas, Lance Lane, Victoria Clegg, and Anthony Peebles.
  • AMHS FFA also had a few notable awards from proficiency applications. Ellis Walton placed second in the North Region of Georgia for his work with Veterinary Medicine and MeaLenea Homer placed second as well with her Agriscience Research in Animal Systems.

After School Loitering Policy
All students who are not participating in school-sponsored activities must vacate the building and leave the premises no later than 4:00pm daily. AMHS Receives Learning Gardens Grant
Arabia Mountain High School recently received a Nature Works Learning Program Grant presented in partnership with the Nature Conservancy, The Captain Planet Foundation and the Environmental Media Association. AMHS is the first of eleven Metro Atlanta Schools to receive this grant in 2014. On April 3rd, representatives of these organizations visited Arabia Mountain to celebrate the award by working side by side with our AMHS Environmental (LEAF) students in the school’s gardens.
